Retired Faculty : Professor Emeritus
Jennifer
Shapka ECPS Department Head and Professor
Dr. Shapka’s training is in the area of developmental psychology, and she is particularly interested in identifying how contextual factors are contributing to developmental wellbeing for adolescents. To this end, she has been exploring the impact of what it means to grow up in an information age by examining the impact of the internet on social and cognitive development. Her current research is focused on exploring the online risks associated with cyberbullying, as well as privacy-related concerns due to the over-disclosure of personal information online.

Laurie
Ford Associate Professor
With a strong interdisciplinary focus to my scholarly interests, I believe we learn from each other and make the greatest difference in the lives of children, youth, and their families when we work collaboratively across supportive school and community environments. Family-school-community relationships and creating trust and sense of belonging in schools for families of students who are often considered vulnerable has been a scholarly interest throughout my career. Currently I am exploring ways we can best support school belonging for students with diverse learning needs and their families including those who are immigrants, refugees, and/or have special learning and mental health needs. My research has also focused on children in early childhood and their families including family engagement in learning and early childhood assessment. Collaborative approaches to addressing the mental health needs of children and youth and communicating with families about the learning and mental health needs of their children is also an area of focus for students in our lab.

Dr. Kassan’s scholarly interests are informed by her own bi-cultural identity. As such, her program of study is informed by an overarching social justice lens. Her research presently includes two major foci. First, she is conducting research pertaining to migration experiences across different populations (i.e., newcomer youth, same-sex binational couples, and LGBTQ newcomers). Second, she is carrying out research in the area of teaching and learning, investigating cultural and social justice competencies among graduate students and field supervisors. Dr. Kassan is committed to the implications of this research for counselling training and practice.

Jennifer
Vadeboncoeur Professor
Dr. Vadeboncoeur’s research examines the development of imagining and moral imagining in imaginative play, including how children initiate, maintain, and conclude imaginative play, as well as how they transition between imaginative play and other social practices. Building from previous critical ethnographic research the United States and Australia, she continues to work with young people and teachers in alternative programs, inquiring into the process of re-engagement, the contradictions of alternative programs, including the ways in which they both perpetuate inequity and create safe spaces, and the concept of moral imagining in student-teacher relationships. Upcoming research projects inquire into children’s and youths’ relations with nature.

Professor Zumbo is an internationally renowned research methodologist, measurement theorist, and applied statistician/mathematician. His program of research has had wide influence in psychometrics, validity theory, educational and behavioral statistics, and language testing.

Over the last nearly 30 years his interdisciplinary program of research has emerged to have broad interdisciplinary impact and as such is well-recognized in a variety of disciplines including psychometrics and measurement, statistics, language testing, educational research, quality of life and well being, health and human development.

His research has branched to many areas in statistics, measurement, and scientific methodology. He takes a problem-solving point of view to his research in that the research is not tied to any one area of statistics or measurement. Given his scholarly background in mathematics and philosophy, he learns and integrates new areas of mathematics or new areas of philosophy as necessary to solve a new scientific problem.

As is evident from the list of publications and awards, his program of research is noted for his having addressed cross-disciplinary recurring controversial topics such as theories of measurement validity, measurement invariance, the role of levels (or scales) of measurement in statistics, and the role of hypothesis testing in empirical studies and particularly their lack of robustness to violations of assumptions. His contributions to these debates have highlighted his orientation from philosophy of science, scientific methodology, and the intersection of mathematics, measurement and statistical science.

His program of research is actively engaged in psychometrics for language testing, quality of life and wellbeing, and health and human development. This applied work, in the end, feeds his basic program of research in research methodology and measurement.

His scholarly life is driven by an immense curiosity and desire to learn, as well as a great deal of energy and commitment to learning, knowledge translation and dissemination.
