EPSE 604 Reimagining Resilience: Young People’s Development in Complex Systems

Winter 1 2025 | In-Person

Time: Thursday, 4:30-7:30 pm

Today’s young people are born into a world of global changes and challenges that transform the social, political, economic and psychological conditions of everyday life. Young people are expected to cope with these changes that often place them at risk for poor well-being, increased anxiety, challenges with identity formation, and future orientation. While many policies, practices, and theories define resilience with individual characteristics, such as perseverance and grit, this perspective neither locates youth within networks of social relations and systems, nor is it fair or just. In addition, it does not create effective, sustainable and scalable practices.

Indeed, resilience emerges from the collective power of young people in relation to family, school, community, and wider society. This course will focus on the lives and experiences of young people and explore the concept of resilience from complex systems and social justice perspectives. We will take a collaborative and relational approach and develop our understanding of resilience science prioritizing voices of young people, integrating the complex structure of life into its content, utilizing multi-disciplinary and culturally sensitive language, aiming for systemic changes as well as individual changes, and prioritizing prevention over medical models. Overall, this course aims to rethink resilience and revolutionize our resilience lens and practice. MEd, MA and PhD students are welcome.
