EPSE 317 Course Information:

EPSE 317 is a required course in the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program that introduces teacher candidates to inclusive education. The course is framed by the principles of Disability Justice and recognizes disability as a valued social identity rather than a deficit. It emphasizes anti-ableism, Universal Design for Learning (UDL 3.0), disability rights, trauma-informed practices, restorative justice, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and the creation of equitable classroom environments.

EPSE 317 follows a community of practice model, where lecturers and Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA’s) work collaboratively alongside the course coordinator. This structure ensures consistency in course delivery while fostering a shared responsibility for teaching and learning. A common syllabus is provided, and lectures receive ongoing support in implementing and designing course content.

This posting is for the position of Sessional Lecturer for the week of July 14-18, covering all four lectures daily and supporting seminars immediately following the lectures (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM-5:00 PM). This week of the course covers inclusive responses to student behaviour, restorative justice in the classroom, trauma-informed practices, and school-based teams.

Responsibilities:
  • Clear understanding of the course design and overall assignments.
  • Deliver engaging and interactive lectures to large groups of teacher candidates, ensuring alignment with the week’s topics, course objectives, and assignments.
  • Edit and update course lectures, readings, and seminar lesson plans for the assigned course week that align with the course assessment.
  • Support and mentor GTAs in facilitating post-lecture seminars, helping them implement experiential learning activities that reinforce course concepts.
  • Engage in the community of practice, collaborating with GTA’s, other lectures, and the course coordinator to ensure alignment with the course structure.
  • Participate in a mandatory orientation prior to the course start date.
Required Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience in inclusive K-12 educational settings.
  • Thorough understanding of the BC K-12 educational system specifically related to supporting disabled students.
  • Experience implementing UDL.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an instructional team in a shared teaching model.
  • Strong expertise in inclusive behavioral support, including experience with restorative justice in schools, trauma-informed practices, and school-based intervention teams to support inclusive classrooms.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Background in Disability Studies in Education and Inclusive Education.
  • Knowledge of how understandings of disability inform educational practice
  • Experience teaching in higher educational settings and/or professional development to teachers concerning inclusive education.
Eligibility:
  • Graduate students enrolled in master’s or doctoral programs who meet the required qualifications are encouraged to apply.
    • Student applicants must obtain approval from their research supervisor to confirm they are making satisfactory progress in their program.
  • Individuals who are not currently students but possess the appropriate qualifications are also welcome to apply.
