“I strongly believe in community care. When we focus too much on the individual, we risk treating burnout and stress as personal problems, instead of recognizing them as collective challenges.”
We are pleased to share a recent Q&A interview featuring Dr. Lianne Tomfohr-Madsen, ECPS Associate Professor in Counselling Psychology, and an investigator at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR).
In the interview, published in recognition of International Self-Care Day (July 24), Dr. Tomfohr-Madsen explores how traditional notions of self-care—often individualistic and resource-dependent—can be reimagined as more inclusive, communal, and equitable practices.
Drawing from her work with new parents and families who are racialized or living with limited financial resources, she emphasizes the importance of grounding self-care in joy, connection, and collective support, particularly for children and youth facing challenging circumstances.
