Debopriya is an MA student in Counseling Psychology at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Education. She is an international student from India. She has previously worked with children and women from underrepresented and marginalized communities as part of organizations such as U&I Desire Society, Centre for Social Action and Sanjh Jagori. During this time, she helped with the identification, assistance and treatment of mental health concerns within the populations. Debopriya is interested in making Western counselling treatment methods more accessible to suit the needs of different communities in cross-cultural settings and hopes to practice as a counselling psychologist for underrepresented and vulnerable populations.
Research Interests:
Debopriya’s research interests include cross-cultural psychology, culturally suited counselling modalities for South Asian populations, and traditional healing methods. Her thesis research focuses on understanding attitudes towards seeking counselling within India and factors influencing such attitudes. The overarching purpose of the study is towards the decolonization of mental health treatment methods and recognition of Eastern values in integration with Western systems of Counselling.
