ECPS GAA Student Council has organized three workshops for graduate students throughout the Faculty of Education.

LITERATURE REVIEWS: JOINING THE SCHOLARLY CONVERSATION

Facilitator: Anneke van Enk, Research Associate (Centre for Health Education Scholarship, Faculty of Medicine)

Literature reviews are more than just summaries, they are a key component of your research article that provides the opportunity to engage in scholarly conversation.  This workshop will look at summaries and focus on strategies for synthesis, but will also determine citation options that are available.

This workshop will explain how to properly introduce your sources and coherently bring them together to prepare readers for your research contributions.


REPORT WRITING FOR INTEGRATED PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Facilitators: Dr. Ted Wormeli (Registered Psychologist, POPARD), Dr. Barbara Holmes (BC School Psychology Internship Consortium), and Sandy Stanton, Certified School Psychologist (BC School Psychology Internship Consortium)

This workshop discusses the basics in planning, organizing, and writing comprehensive, integrated psychoeducational reports.  This interactive session will provide practical advice from a panel of experienced psychologists. The panel will answer questions on the process and mechanics of report writing. In addition, students will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their writing.


INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS

Facilitators: Charlotte Beck, Liaison Librarian (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Speech Sciences, and History of Science and Medicine), Faculty of Education Librarians: Jo-Anne Naslund and Wendy Trass

This is a hands-on workshop that will provide you with tools and techniques for conducting systematic literature reviews. Systematic Reviews are a relatively new research methodology that is gaining importance in Education, Psychology, and many other disciplines.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Learn an overview of the Systematic Review process as a research methodology
  • Review definitions of research topics, and how to analyze concepts and criteria for inclusion and exclusion
  • Identify best databases for searching
  • How to generate comprehensive, structured searches using keywords and subject headings
  • Discover other sources for finding studies, such as Grey Literature and Reference Chaining
  • Learn tips and tricks for managing the process and being productive, including information about Refworks
