Grounded theory is a method of qualitative inquiry that has particular relevance for mental health research. This presentation will provide an overview of grounded theory methodology, in the context of research on mental health and among vulnerable populations. Topics covered will include:
· Study design considerations
· Data analysis
· Theoretical sampling
· Constant comparison
· Strategies for rigor
The presentation will include examples from Dr. Ben-David’s mental health service use research among youth and young adults living with mental health challenges.

About Speaker
Dr. Shelly Ben-David is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work, UBC-Okanagan, where she teaches graduate social work students and provides clinical supervision in the mental health division of the UBC-O Interprofessional Clinic. Her research, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, is focused on understanding mental health service use and the development of early interventions among young people with serious mental health problems, particularly those experiencing psychosis.
