“It Takes a Village”: Building a Sense of Community in Teaching, Leadership, and Service

Abstract

In this presentation, Dr. Lina Darwich will explain how and why her focus on building a sense of community guides her teaching, leadership, and service. She will share examples from her teaching and from her role as a colleague to illustrate this focus. She will also address how her long-term goals for teaching, leadership, and service are informed by her commitment to forming trusting relationships with the different communities and individuals who serve children and youth.

Biography

Dr. Lina Darwich earned a B.A. and B.Ed. from the American University of Beirut and a Ph.D. in Human Development, Learning, and Culture (HDLC) from UBC. She was an elementary school teachers before she joined UBC. She is an assistant professor in the teacher education program at Lewis & Clark College. She teaches child and adolescent development, classroom management, and a seminar that focuses on teaching for social justice. She is interested in identifying how social and emotional learning intersects with social justice.
