Dear Colleagues,
It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Dr. Bonita (Bonnie) Long, Professor Emerita in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS). Dr. Long passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, in the arms of her husband, Dr. Robert (Bob) Schutz, also a longtime UBC faculty member, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
An award-winning educator, researcher and mentor in the Faculty’s counselling psychology program, Dr. Long’s scholarship examined work-related stress and coping, and how gender roles, occupations and life circumstances shape the experiences of professionals, student mothers and individuals living with chronic illness. Over the course of her esteemed career, she held executive roles in scholarly societies, served on prominent editorial boards, and was nominated three times for a Faculty Teaching Prize.
During her 25 years with the Faculty, Dr. Long mentored more than 60 graduate students and contributed extensively to departmental and university service. Highly sought after as a graduate supervisor, she was warmly regarded by her students for her supportive and rigorous mentorship. A strong advocate for feminist perspectives, she provided exceptional leadership and support for women faculty and students alike.
Born in 1945 in New Westminster, BC, Dr. Long led an extraordinary life marked by perseverance and intellectual curiosity. After leaving school in Grade 10, she became a mother at 18. Later, as a single parent, she worked full-time while attending night classes, ultimately earning her BEd (1974), MA (1978), and PhD (1982)—all from UBC. She joined the Faculty of Education as an Assistant Professor in 1982 and retired as a Professor in 2007.
Dr. Long’s impact extended far beyond academia. She and Bob shared a deep love of learning and adventure—hiking, kayaking, cycling, golfing and travelling widely together. In retirement, she became an accomplished painter, celebrated for her vibrant acrylic and oil works. She will be remembered as a gracious host, lifelong learner and role model whose generosity of spirit inspired all who knew her.
To honour Dr. Long’s memory, the British Columbia, Musqueam, and UBC flags will be lowered. For details, please visit the Protocol, Ceremonies and Events website.
Her full obituary, including Celebration of Life event details, can be read here.
The Faculty of Education extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Long’s family, friends, colleagues, and former students.
With sympathy,
Dr. Jan Hare
Dean, UBC Faculty of Education
