EPSE 502 | Cognition, Language and Literacy Processes in Education

Qualifications and Duties:

Preference is given to individuals who have a doctoral degree in an area related to language and literacy development and learning. Applications will also be considered from doctoral students who have achieved candidacy and are eligible to teach as a sessional instructor (with approval of their research supervisor). Candidates must have a strong understanding of social as well as psychological theories and research concerning language development and learning and a willingness to examine these with a critical EDI lens. The course covers: language development across the lifespan (infancy through old-age), cross-cultural trends in language acquisition, including some focus on Indigenous languages (e.g., language loss and language revitalization), atypical language/literacy development (e.g., language development in children who are Deaf/hard of hearing or literacy development in children who are blind/visually impaired), and models of language/literacy instruction. There should be opportunities to consider how modern technology is affecting language development and literacy teaching and learning, and to identify directions for future research and practice relating to language and literacy development and learning. It is preferred that the successful applicant will have post-secondary level teaching experience related to the topic of this course, but it is not required. As well, experience teaching, counselling, or consulting in K-12 schools is an asset.

EPSE 583 | Fostering Self-Regulated Learning

Qualifications and Duties:

Preference will be given to applicants with a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology, Human Development, Learning and Culture, Inclusive Education, or a related field. Applications will also be considered from doctoral students who have achieved candidacy and are eligible to teach as a sessional instructor (with approval of their research supervisor). Applicants will need to have a strong understanding of theoretical perspectives and contemporary research related to metacognition, self-regulated learning (SRL), and active forms of learning (and how those are interrelated). Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge about and experience in mobilizing theories and research related to metacognition and SRL in practice (e.g., building supports for SRL into classrooms and schools; from pre-school to post-secondary education; from formal classrooms to different kinds of out-of-school learning experiences). Ideal candidates will also be able to identify links between supporting SRL and empowering diverse learners (i.e., with inclusive practices), how SRL and metacognition are socially and culturally-situated, and links among metacognition, SRL, social-emotional learning, and executive functioning. It is preferred that the successful applicant will have post-secondary level teaching experience related to the topic of this course, but it is not required. Knowledge of BC’s redesigned curriculum is also an asset.

EPSE 482 | Introduction to Statistics for Research in Education

Qualifications and Duties:

Successful applicants must have successfully completed (not audited) intermediate and advanced graduate quantitative methods courses. Preference is given to persons who have taught EPSE 482 (or an equivalent course or other UBC MERM courses (e.g., EPSE 592 or 596) with a positive teaching evaluation record. Preference will be given to current MERM doctoral students who have reached candidacy, current MERM post-doctoral fellows, or former MERM students with strong communication skills.
