Special Education Diploma Program
The objective of this program is to prepare teachers to support and work with students with special needs in a variety of school settings. Applicants must have at least two years of full-time teaching experience in general education classrooms. Alternatively, teachers must have a continuing contract in a school district and currently have a learning assistance or resource teacher assignment.
Over the last few years, the Diploma in Special Education has become a requirement in several local school districts for Resource Room Teachers or Learning Assistance Teachers. The Diploma is designed to provide a basic foundation in the field of Special Education with the choice of electives allowing for specialization, as needed. The core program is directed to the teaching of children and adolescents with developmental, learning, and behavioural disabilities. The remainder of the program allows students the opportunity to tailor a program to their own teaching needs and interests in areas such as autism or high ability students.
The majority of students in the Diploma in Special Education are currently employed full-time as teachers. For this reason, most prefer to take courses in the evenings and during the summer, so courses are offered at these times. A limited number of courses are also available through distance education. Please note EDUC 399 - Field experience and practice - is no longer a requirement of the Special Education Diploma Program.
