Tenure track position in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for an assistant professor tenure track appointment in Special Education with a specialization in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This position is supported by a program expansion initiative undertaken by the province of British Columbia. Applicants for this position will have a doctoral degree in Special Education, Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or a closely related area. Evidence of research and scholarly achievement are required. Strong preference will be given to individuals with research and teaching experience in either or both of the following areas: (1) language and literacy development in the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing and/or (2) the development of speech and listening skills, including working with children with cochlear implants. A minimum of three years classroom teaching experience with deaf/hard of hearing students strongly preferred. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2010, or as soon as it is filled.
The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active program of research, seek research grant funding, and provide practicum and research supervision of masters and doctoral students.
UBC offers the only program in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in British Columbia, and is one of only three programs in Canada. Approximately 15 M.A. or M.Ed. students are admitted in alternate years. The program is comprehensive in approach, and places strong emphasis on developing critical thinking skills among students. Graduate training at UBC is distinguished in its strong appreciation for diversity in terms of the breadth of issues examined, and the provision of experiences in working with a broad range of students who are deaf and hard of hearing across a variety of settings.
There are five program areas in the Department, including Counselling Psychology; Human Development, Learning and Culture; School Psychology; Special Education; and Measurement, Evaluation and Research Methodology. Approximately 400 graduate students, including 95 Ph.D. students, are enrolled in the Department. The Department has strong ties to schools, community and government agencies. The Department has outstanding records of both student and faculty research funding.
