Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples: An Attachment Perspective on Relationship Distress

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is a highly effective, empirically supported, experiential, model of couple therapy. This seminar incorporates video demonstration, case examples, didactic material, and interactive discussion, in order to introduce students to the practice of EFT and the underlying tenets and theory that ground and guide EFT therapists in their work with distressed couples.

Tuesday, November 4, 2014  |  4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Neville Scarfe Building, Room 310

Participants will:
  1. gain an overview of the three stages of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT);
  2. learn to apply an adult attachment framework in work with distressed couples;
  3. understand relationship distress from a systemic perspective and recognize how discord results from negative interactional cycles that couples create together and fall victim to;
  4. learn strategies to soften reactive anger and withdrawal, and to access underlying emotions that evoke more engaged, caring responses in partners

This event is open to faculty, staff, and students who practice counselling or social work.
