UBC Application Procedures for Students Without an Existing Masters or Higher Degree
The BACB requires a Masters or higher degree for BCBA certification. Students who wish to obtain a graduate degree must complete the usual application process for admission to a graduate program at UBC. Typically, students who are interested in BCBA certification will apply for admission to a graduate program in Special Education in the Dept. of Educational and Counseling Psychology and Special Education (ECPS). This may be:
In these programs, the five BCBA-approved courses can be taken along with other courses to meet the requirements for a graduate degree. Alternatively, students may apply for admission to another ECPS graduate program (e.g., school psychology, counseling psychology) or to a graduate program in another Department, and add the five BCBA courses to that program’s existing course requirements.
Please note that admission to UBC graduate programs is quite competitive, and only a limited number of new students are admitted each year. UBC’s Faculty of Graduate Studies requires a minimum GPA of 76% or better in 3rd and 4th year undergraduate courses, plus three letters of references from individuals who can comment favorably on the applicant’s academic potential (i.e., letters from employers or families with whom you have worked are less desirable than letters from past or current Professors). The application deadline for graduate admissions is December 1 of each year, and students who are admitted can begin their programs in either the following summer or September semesters. UBC Application Procedures for Students Who Already Have a Masters or Higher Degree
Students who already have a Masters or higher degree in any area from an approved University (see General Requirements) can apply for either a Ph.D. program in Special Education or for admission to UBC as an “unclassified student" in order to take one or more of the BACB-approved courses. For information about current tuition fees for Ph.D. students, click here. For information about current fees for unclassified students, click here (please note that unclassified student fees for graduate-level courses are assessed per credit, and all of the BACB-approved courses are 3 credits).
Students with graduate degrees from UBC should proceed as follows to obtain unclassified student status and enroll in BACB courses:
1. Send an email to the office of the Registrar at records.inquiry@ubc.ca or phone 604-822-2844, telling them that you want to re-enroll as an unclassified student. Be sure to provide your old UBC student ID number.
2. Once your unclassified status is confirmed, contact the instructor of the course for which you wish to register, to ask if the course is full. If it is full, you will have to wait until the next time it is offered. The usual course instructor for EPSE 504, 513, and 532 is Dr. Pat Mirenda (pat.mirenda@ubc.ca) and the usual instructor for EPSE 514 and 593 is Dr. Joe Lucyshyn (joe.lucyshyn@ubc.ca).
3. If the instructor gives you permission to register, download the form entitled “Enrolment of Unclassified Students in Graduate Courses”.
4. Complete the form and email it to the course instructor at least 4 weeks before the first day of the course. He or she will sign the form and pass it along for approval by the Graduate Adviser. Once it has been approved, you will be registered in the course by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
5. Make a deposit of $100 through the Student Services Centre.
6. Check the Student Services Centre website periodically to view your account, and be sure to pay the course fee balance by the due date.
Please note that you must follow steps 2-6 for all five of the BACB courses in which you intend to register
Students with graduate degrees from an accredited University other than UBC should proceed as follows to obtain unclassified student status and enroll in BACB courses:

2. Complete the form and send it to the address indicated, with the one-time application fee.
3. Once your unclassified status is confirmed and you have been assigned a UBC student number, contact the instructor of the course for which you wish to register, to ask if the course is full.
