CNPS Master's Programs - Approved Prerequisites

Admissions Criteria | Program Policies | Time Schedules | Internship Placement

To meet the December 1st application deadline, students applying for standing for CNPS 362, 363, or 365 must submit their requests and the accompanying materials no later than October 31st. The memo confirming that standing has been granted must be appended to your application form.

The following prerequisites also apply to the VRHC Area of Focus.

CNPS 362 (Basic Interviewing Skills)

Completed standing is not routinely granted for CNPS 362. Applicants who have NOT completed CNPS 362 at the University of British Columbia MUST apply to have the course they successfully completed elsewhere, reviewed following the CNPS 362 Review Procedure. Some courses recently assessed as similar in content are listed below. Successful completion of one of the courses within the last 10 years does not guarantee that your will be granted standing for CNPS 362. You must still complete the CNPS 362 review process, including submission of a DVD of a mock counselling session for review by the members of the 362 committee. If standing is granted, you must append to your application form, a copy of the memo verifying that you have been granted standing for CNPS 362. For the review to be completed prior to the December 1st application deadline, requests must be received no later than October 31st.

CNPS 363 (Career Counselling)

Applicants who have taken one of the following courses do not need to apply for further review for CNPS 363. Just indicate the course and institution on the Supplementary Application Form. Applicants who have taken a course which they consider similar but which is not on listed below, may submit the course outline, course number, and institution to the CNPS 363 Course Coordinator, Dr. Norm Amundson for review. If standing is granted, you must append to your application form, a copy of the memo verifying that you have been granted standing for CNPS 363. For the review to be completed prior to the December 1st application deadline, requests must be received no later than October 31st.

CNPS 365 (Theories of Counselling)

If standing is granted, you must append to your application form, a copy of the memo verifying that you have been granted standing for CNPS 365. For the review to be completed prior to the December 1st application deadline, requests must be received no later than October 31st.

Abnormal or Behavioural Disorders

Most upper level undergraduate courses in Abnormal Psychology meet the pre-requisite requirement. Applicants do not need to submit materials for review unless they have considerable doubt that their course may not be understood as addressing abnormal or behavioural disorders. Review will occur when the application is adjudicated, unless there are exceptional circumstances requiring an earlier review. This course standing will be reviewed at the time of application.
